Heaps of them were called box-office poison and quickly forgotten.

Thanks for the explanation, and I'll make sure to check out Wings and Okay, Jose at some pointChris Hewsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11566568274862884325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5328381841527790655.post-68806340574810938252012-07-07T01:43:46.865-07:002012-07-07T01:43:46.865-07:00You're so right about this being a strange mov...You're so right about this being a strange movie. And for some reason I always forget Jack La Rue was in it; he played a background heavy in a lot of early pre-codes and then in the 1940s started getting cast as a cop all the time.

MGM has a lot of vague almost-jokes that people who remembered risque stuff in Vaudeville would chuckle at, Dolores and the flea circus being a good example, though I think there is a vague entendre in the "let's make moon" malapropism too.

El is mostly not annoying in this film; he can be really irritating at times, and I say that as someone who loves El Brendel. His best roles IMO are in "Wings" (1927) and a short called "Okay, Jose," and he's often the best actor of the bunch in some very early talkies starring Janet Gaynor and her screechy voice.Staciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05250238254417726987noreply@blogger.com
